Interview with Shahdad Rohani, composer and orchestra conductor, about theme music: Composing Melodies Is an Art

Although Shahdad Rohani is Iranian, he became famous after cooperation with a non-Iranian musician. His career in music had started many years before he conducted an orchestra for the Greek Musician, Yani, at Acropolis, but release of the concert’s videos in Iran made him famous overnight. Afterwards, he was also known for conducting other orchestral performances in Iran, including Tehran Symphonic Orchestra. He visited Iran recently to conduct Tehran Symphonic Orchestra once more, but with a slight difference: this year, he considered a special repertoire for the orchestra and apart from the fact that all musical pieces were new he incorporated pieces of film music. He had included theme music from Ben-Hur (Milkos Rozsa), Jaws (John Williams), and Psycho (Bernard Herrmann) in the repertoire to record a new move in live music performance in the world. He also meant to make Iranian musical players experience new musical pieces. His personal interest in film music dates back to many years ago when he was admitted to UCLA as the first Iranian to study that course, and made the acquaintance of great composers like John Williams, Henri Mancini, and many others under whose supervision he completed musical courses. The following is text of an interview with him about theme music. After he heard about the subject of the interview, Rohani had difficulty hiding his excitement about the opportunity to talk about his field of interest.
